biography

Born and raised in rural Montana, Winnie was always a whimsical girl. She spent most of her young life traipsing the fields and picking wildflowers to bring home to her mother Dorothy. Dorothy was a hugely successful poet before Winnie was born, travelling the world to find inspiration and market her books. She took many lovers on the road, but the most alluring was a young man she met in her late 20s. He was handsome, mysterious, and seemed to glow; he was enchanted by her way with words and the two spent a passionate night together. A few weeks later, Dorothy took a pregnancy test and decided it was best to return home to have her baby. On her way back to her rural property, she was in a crash; she was unharmed, but the damage to the family in the other vehicle was considerable. It was ruled a mistake and neither party pressed charges. That being said, Dorothy, who had a long history of mental illness, became very paranoid and swore to protect her baby from the world.

Winnie was homeschooled for as long as she could remember. Her mum insisted on living in as remote a place as possible; Winnie was never sure why, but her many questions always went ignored. She had little contact with the world, but she adored her mother and her grandparents, who visited frequently.

One day, Winnie’s mother received a devastating call: her beloved parents had passed away. With nobody to manage their property and business, Dorothy reluctantly packed up her daughter and they moved to New York. Once settled, Winnie turned 11. She began to have strange, vivid dreams almost nightly. In some, she saw horrible creatures prowling around the streets of her town, their awful noses to the ground as though smelling, hunting. In others, she saw the wind skimming over beautiful strawberry fields on a sunny day.

With her new inheritance, Dorothy hired a private tutor, Calix, to school Winnie from their townhouse. He was a strange man, but he understood Winnie’s unique way of thinking and the two became very close. Winnie confided to him about her disturbing dreams. Calix always listened patiently to her stories, nodding solemnly.

Not long after her birthday, Winnie was drawing on the pavement outside her house with chalk. It was a peaceful day, but she had the distinct sense that something was terribly wrong. Disturbed by this, she fled inside; as soon as she shut the door behind her, an awful creature emerged from the street and began to bang its head against the house. She recognised it as a minotaur, thanks to Calix’s extensive Greek myth tutelage. Winnie called Dorothy in to help, but Dorothy was paralysed with fear, unable to comprehend what she was seeing.

The minotaur broke down the door and cornered Winnie, nearly piercing her on its horn, only to crumble suddenly into a pile of ashes. Behind the pile stood Calix with a fireplace poker. He then explained to Winnie and her mum who he was: a satyr, guide for demigods. He told them of a place called Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp that provided education and protection to demigods, and assured Winnie that the dreams she had were not signs of craziness, as she had feared, but instead very real.

Dorothy didn’t believe him at first. He had to show his goat legs to prove he was telling the truth. She was still unwilling to send Winnie away, but Calix persisted and described the dangers of a demigod living in normal society, as well as the magical barriers in place around the camp. He had to swear Winnie would be safer there (and constantly in touch) before Dorothy let him take her to the camp, insisting on joining them the whole way. Once safely delivered at camp, Winnie was claimed by Apollo in her first week. She adored camp, especially the scent of the strawberry fields on hot days; her and the satyrs became close as she got involved with the camp’s cover business, Delphi Strawberry Service. She packs the strawberries ready for sale at local markets and Iris messages her mother every day.

Personality

Winnie, having grown up almost entirely in her company, is a strange girl with a rich internal world. Eccentric yet serene, she has a way of observing truths that other people may not notice. Content in her solitude, Winnie can happily while hours away simply people-watching and talking to herself. She also enjoys repetitive movements such as clicking her fingers and swaying, finding them to be soothing. Winnie is neither insecure nor self-conscious, quite happy to be herself even when others don’t like it; optimistic and kind, she holds no grudges and doesn’t enjoy confrontation. She is an excellent archer but doesn’t enjoy training, being more of a lover than a fighter.

Like her father, she adores art, music, and poetry. Being the daughter of the god of prophecy, she has frequent and vivid dreams that tend towards the prophetic. She enjoys the company of satyrs, appreciating nature and singing with them. When interacting with others, she is friendly and sweet but can come across as odd: extremely curious, it can seem like she asks intrusive questions. This could be interpreted as a disregard for social etiquette, though it’s never meant to offend. There’s nothing sinister about Winnie’s curiosity, she just finds everyone, and everything, deeply fascinating.
