biography

A former demigod himself, Dionysus (now known as Mr. D to the campers), was born to Semele and Zeus. His mother tragically died when Hera tricked her into asking Zeus to show his true form to her. Zeus was able to save Dionysus by placing him inside his thigh until he was able to burst forth as a fully grown human.

Upon his 'birth', Zeus hid his child with his maternal aunt and her husband. They raised him as a girl to hide him from Hera's scorn. But she found him anyway, drove the whole house mad except him. Dionysus was only saved by Zeus turning him into a goat. He then took him to the rain nymphs of Mount Nysa, and they raised him.

As an adult he discovered the vine, however, Hera found him once more and struck him mad. He wandered the globe before eventually being cured by the titaness Rhea. Once cured, Dionysus continued to travel the globe but now he taught others how to cultivate and use the vine.

Dionysus fought alongside Heracles during the First Gigantomachy. Eventually he was recognized for his skill in wine making and was invited to join the gods on Olympus. Hestia graciously gave up her throne, allowing him to be one of the 12 major pantheon gods.

Several things happened over his years as a god. Of the things he considers the most important is the rescuing and marrying of his wife Ariadne. One of his biggest regrets is twice chasing after a nymph that Zeus had proclaimed off-limits, as that is what landed him at Camp Half-Blood for 100 years with the secondary punishment of not being allowed to drink wine.

After the Battle of Manhattan in 2009, during the Second Titan War, Zeus reduces Dionysus' sentence so that he only has 50 years left. Dionysus eagerly awaits his return to Olympus.

The death of his half-blood son Castor has a profound effect on Dionysus. While he does not directly protect or even show affection to his children, Dionysus does care a great deal for them. More so than most gods. Still, he could hardly be called friendly to them.

Personality

Dionysus, at first glance, has a rather displeasing temperament. He can be cruel, sarcastic, and downright bitter in most interactions. His temper is catastrophic when triggered and he is not above threatening children when angered.  He has a strong dislike of heroes, especially after the way Theseus treated Ariadne.

Despite that, that rough exterior, Dionysus does care about his campers. He would never deign to show them, but greatly dislikes anyone other than himself that mistreats them. Dionysus has been known to use his powers to save the demigods when and where he can, though he does not directly jump into the fray himself. He also has a reasonably close kinship with Chiron, though one couldn't exactly call him kind to the centaur either--though Chiron never receives threats from Dionysus either.
