biography

Idris Zale Cohen was born to Gabrielle Cohen, an American archeologist and historian who had been working on a dig in Greece at the time. She developed an interest in Greek mythology and carried that with her to her studies in her bachelor's program. She had always been intrigued by the legends and stories that surrounded the ancient gods and goddesses of Greece. She made trips to see famous examples of Greek architecture and art, such as the existing temples built to honor some of the deities. One of her favorite sites is the Parthenon which stands on top of the citadel of the Acropolis. It was during a visit to the Samothrace Temple Complex that Gabrielle met Arthur Evans, a charming and witty guide who led her through the site, pointing out important details and giving interesting background information on each artifact and structure they came across.

After spending several amazing days touring ancient Greece with Arthur, she found herself falling for him. After an intense romance that lasted the duration of Gabrielle's stay, Arthur revealed to her that he was actually Hermes, the messenger god. One day after a passionate encounter, he explained to her who he was and that he had disguised himself as a mortal in order to experience life on earth. However, he wasted no time proceeding with his departure, leaving her heartbroken but with a newfound appreciation for Greek mythology. Even though she never saw Hermes again, she never forgot her experience with him and continued to pursue her area of study throughout her life. Nine months later, Idris was born, a healthy baby boy who seemed to take after his mother's curiosity.

Growing up in a household with an archeologist and historian mother, Idris was exposed to the wonders of history and mythology from a young age. He loved hearing stories of prominent figures and their heroic deeds, and often found himself daydreaming about living in a world where they still roamed the Earth. When his mother told him that he was the son of Hermes, he was skeptical. THE son of THE Greek god?  It was a lot to take in, but his fascination with Greek mythology kept him intrigued and he began to ask his mother more questions about it. However, he wasn't told much about him and the fact that he wasn't there to be a part of his life left him disappointed but grateful his mother raised him with love and care.

Idris grew up travelling with his mother and exploring the world with her while she went on expeditions. When his mother had free time, she would take him down to the dig sites, and he would explore the safer areas he was allowed to under her careful watch. When he was younger, he would try to take a small artifact or two, but his mother always caught him and made him return it. Whenever she was working, a nanny was hired to take care of Idris. Gabrielle made sure to hire someone trustworthy and responsible, who would not only take care of Idris's daily needs but also encourage his love of learning and exploration.  One of Idris's most memorable nannies was a young woman named Sophia, who shared his passion for history and storytelling. She was a college student  who was studying anthropology and spent every moment with Idris sharing interesting facts about different cultures and traditions. She was an excellent cook too, making him  delicious homemade meals in most of her shifts in the Cohen home.  Idris grew to think of Sophia as more than just a nanny but also another teacher and a close friend. Overnight, however, that changed as the girl suddenly grew crabby and seemed to become an entirely different person. The food suddenly seemed more ill-prepared and she would gaslight Idris by telling him that everything he knew about  Greek mythology was false and that he should focus on more important things like math and science. Idris felt discouraged and unhappy with the changes in his nanny, but he didn't know how to tell his mother about the situation.

He didn't want to bother his mother when she was working  and didn't want to make her feel guilty for hiring Sophia. Determined, he took matters into his own hands and was going to confront her about the change in personality. He walked downstairs with a nervous but determined look on his face. However, he found her sitting on the one person couch with the television on. He could see her shadow and blinked. Were those claws just now?  Idris took a deep breath and decided to approach her anyway. When he found her, she wasn't the Sophia that he knew but a creature with bat wings, yellow fangs, and the same claws he noticed earlier. That's not his nanny. She had to be an imposter! Suddenly her change in personality all made sense. Idris didn’t know what happened to the real Sophia, but he had to get away from the fake one.

Idris stumbled backwards, his heart racing in fear. He had never seen anything like it before. He wondered if he was dreaming. Yet the creature stood up and began to follow him.  The boy left his home and ran for his life, not knowing what he was going to do or where he could go.  His mind was racing, trying to figure out where the creature had come from and why his nanny had turned into such a monster.  He knew one thing for sure- he had to inform his mother and get help as soon as possible. What he did not know was that help had arrived sooner than expected. He grabbed a stick and held it like it was a sword,  determined to protect himself in case the creature decided to attack him. Just when he felt like he was about to get cornered, a car swerved through the corner and he took the opportunity to push the creature towards it. The car collided with it with a loud thud and Idris watched as it flew to the ground.

The person behind the wheel turned out to be someone whom he remembered to be one of his mother's colleagues. Before he was about to say anything, he was told to get inside the car quickly before the creature recovers. Idris got inside and the man drove away from the scene. Idris was still catching his breath and trying to process what had just happened.  He looked out the window, watching as they sped away from his home. He was shaking with fear and confusion, but he felt relieved to have someone else there with him who seemed to know what was going on. The man behind the wheel turned to Idris and spoke in a calm voice, "Don't worry son, you're safe now." He asked if the man was Hermes, but  the man just chuckled and said, "No, I'm not your father." A hand slowly removed his hat from his head, revealing a pair of horns.

"I'm a satyr." Idris couldn't believe it.

The two of them drove in silence for a while until Idris began to ask some questions and got caught up with the situation.  The satyr answered Idris's questions about what was really going on, explaining to him that he was a demigod and the creature chasing him. He spoke of a safe place  where Idris could go to be among others like him, a place called Camp Half-Blood.  Idris listened intently, trying to take in everything that the satyr was telling him. But all he could think of was his mother, wondering of her reaction  when she finds out what happened and where he was going. When the two of them arrived at the airport, Idris phoned her and unloaded everything to her, including the attack and being a demigod. He had a feeling she knew  more than what she let on, but she promised her son that he would be safe  and that she would support him no matter what. Idris felt a warmth in his chest, grateful for his mother's unwavering love and support. Together, Idris and the satyr made their way to the gate where they would soon board a flight that would take him to his new home.

Upon arrival, he was claimed by the messenger god, Hermes, which brought Idris a feeling of mixed emotions - excitement, relief, and apprehension. He elected to stay year-round after that cathartic experience, eager to know more about his demigod heritage and to train under experienced mentors at Camp Half-Blood. Idris quickly made new friends among the other demigods at camp, experiencing  a sense of belonging he'd never felt before. He kept in touch with his mother at times, sending her letters detailing his adventures at camp  and how much he was growing in his abilities and confidence. Idris knew that he would always be grateful for the satyr who found him and took him to safety on that fateful day.

Personality

Idris is predisposed to seek adventure and has a strong sense of curiosity. He is also determined and resilient, adapting well to the new and unknown. Even in the face of danger, Idris remains brave and level-headed, always looking for a solution to any problem that may arise. Innovative in thought, Idris is not afraid to question things and think outside the box. However, he is sometimes inclined to act impulsively without considering all the potential consequences. This can often cause misunderstandings between him and others, as sometimes other people get hurt when he doesn’t think things through. He can also be restless at times, especially when he feels stagnant or unchallenged in his environment. Which only makes him more likely to make those impulsive and reckless decisions. He can be found continuously moving around and exploring new opportunities, always striving to improve himself and his skills. Though those efforts don’t always turn out the way he intends them to.

Despite his thirst for adventure and new experiences, Idris values his relationships with those closest to him deeply. He cherishes his mother and appreciates her unwavering support, often keeping in touch with her to share the details of his exciting adventures at camp. His loyalty extends to his friends, whom he considers his new family. He can be brave for them in times of need, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a supportive ear when they need someone to talk to. Idris's positive attitude and willingness to help make him a popular figure among his peers. Overall, Idris is a likable and charismatic character who radiates positive energy wherever he goes.
