Beckett Rutherfurd
Portrait Series - Xavier Serrano (Portrait)

biography

Gloria Rutherfurd was born and raised in a small village where she was inspired by stores of Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton, which led her to become a nurse. She developed a sense of community and a passion for helping other at an early age and was known as a caring and sensitive individual by her peers. She sought opportunities to work in challenging environments, including conflict zones and disaster-stricken areas, providing medical aid and support to those in need. It was one such area that she fell in love with a charming young man named Christian van Cortlandt, who was on a mission to help the people affected by the disaster. He was a volunteer on a mission to provide food to the survivors. The two of them shared a night of passion amidst the chaos and confusion, which resulted in the birth of their son, Beckett Rutherfurd. Since then, she and her mother had been raising him on while making time for her nursing career.

Beckett grew up under the care of his grandmother, mostly. He would see his mother come home at random times exhausted with barely enough energy to spend quality time with him. He was used to it since he knew that she was working hard for the greater good, just like the heroines she looked up to. He played games with his grandmother, learned to cook from her, and listened to her old stories about their family history. Sometimes, he would even play with his neighbors in sports and other activities. It began when they needed one more person to complete their team, and he discovered that he had a natural talent for sports. Because of this, both his mother and grandmother were proud of him for taking an interest in something other than his studies. They placed expectations in such a way that he felt motivated and encouraged to continue pursuing his talents.

What was his greatest strength, there is also a greatest weakness. Beckett struggled with academics due to his dyslexia, which made it hard for him to read and write like other students. Still, he didn't like to use it as an excuse and worked hard to overcome his challenges. With the help of a tutor, he found ways to cope with his learning difficulties. He may not get the best grades, but he still took pride in his achievements and never gave up on himself. Many of his classmates were eager to have him on their team because he had a positive attitude, was a good team player, and always gave his best effort. Yet this did nothing to help with his ego.

He thought he was living a simple life until one day, he was playing a game of soccer and a hellhound attacked the field. He awfully thought how big they were for dogs but it was not until it squashed the ball that he knew to run. He grabbed someone else's backpack and hurled it but it did nothing to faze the monster. In a blur of a moment, his tutor came to his rescue and defeated it with some effort. He was wielding an ancient looking sword and some of his physical traits did not seem... human. Are those hooves? As it turns out, Beckett was a demigod, the offspring of a mortal mother and a Greek god. When asked who his father was, the man only told him to go to Camp Half-Blood to find out.

Beckett was amazed and frightened by this revelation, but he knew that he had to follow his tutor's instructions. His life wasn't the same after that attack and they went home to discuss his departure to camp. Both his grandmother and mother refused at first, but the tutor asked about a man in Gloria's life that she could have possibly met in secret. This one question led to an emotional and tearful confession from his mother about his father, who she thought was dead. She was furious but eventually relented, realizing that Beckett needed to learn more about his father.

The young man flew to New York City, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension about starting his new life. Despite his initial nervousness, the tutor reassured him that he would be surrounded by kids just like him. The night be arrived, he was claimed by Hermes, the messenger god, as his father. It came off as more of a shock to him than a surprise, but he was content to finally know the truth. He'd always ask questions about a father he never knew, but now he had an answer.

Beckett spent the next few years learning about his heritage and training so he could survive another hellhound attack. He writes letters to home with details of his experiences and about the new friends he has made, from demigods to satyrs and even Chiron. Through the ups and downs of camp life, he has learned to rely on himself and his newfound family.

Personality

Beckett is a relatively charming and popular guy so he'll have quite a few shallow, superficial friendships mainly comprised of partying and working out. He usually has his guard up because of how others see him as a typical jock. He is happy to talk about surface level stuff but he struggles to open up to people about deeper issues. Topics like are pretty much off limits. Still, he kind of relies on needing to share to some of his closest friends with whom he is a lot more light hearted and prone to sharing. Even then, some of the details are still kept to himself.

Other than that, he can sometimes be sort of difficult to deal with when things don't go his way. He's arrogant and his priorities at life are skewed, but he is generally a good person and extremely loyal to those he treasures. Even if he's a little bit of a prick sometimes, it's barely ever mean-spirited. He appreciates other hard-workers - if only when it comes to sports and trying to keep it together - and doesn't like genuinely cruel people, because he just finds them off-putting and untrustworthy.
