A Note on Catfishing

We take Catfishing very seriously on Camp Half-Blood RP. Consequences for it can be significant in an effort to protect our members from malignant presences. Because everyone here already goes by an Alias, there is no reason--other than manipulation--for anyone to pretend to be another person than themselves. This includes making a second account and pretending to be more than one person.

In most instances of Catfishing we will weigh the level of harm done (i.e. were they just trying to get around a site rule, or did they harm other members through a faux identity) to determine whether the person is banned or simply warned. In addition, they are given the opportunity to prove that they are more than one person in the event that the IP address registered in their posts is the only evidence against them, and if it truly is 2 separate people the ban is immediately lifted, they are restored, and life goes on.

Why Bring This Up? There's Already a Rule!

Recently we had a long-time member with a significant history of trying to skirt rules attempt to create a second persona. Additionally, this member had been asked not to contact another member of the site, to to personal conflicts between them, and they used this new identity to contact them. This is the exact kind of situation that we are trying to protect people from by having a Catfishing Rule, and we wanted to give warning and set the example of how seriously we take this by making a public announcement to show that it will not be tolerated.

The member in question was Nero who also attempted to use a new Alias of Isotope. They are no longer welcome on the site.

If you are friends with them, that is okay, and your personal business. However, we ask that you no longer discuss things on the site with them. If your characters have ships with his characters, we apologize for the difficulties this gives you as a writer. Additionally, if you have story things that need to happen for your character that involve his characters, please feel free to reach out and ask for support so that we can help move those story bits along for you.

The staff asks for your understanding at this time. It is never an easy decision to ban a member from the site. And it is not something we have done lightly. However, there have been several other warnings for other offenses in the past, and behaviors only seemed to continue to escalate. We hope that Nero finds a home that is more suited to his personality and needs on a site elsewhere.

Sincerely,
The Camp Half-Blood RP Staff
