How it all started

A phone rang in the classroom causing the whole room to be silent. Something was up, as there were never really any phone calls coming in or out of the class. Maddox looked over to his brother who was sitting across the room. The teacher had put them away from each other as they often caused a little trouble when they were around each other. Though then again, what twins didn't cause trouble...Okay maybe a lot of them didn't but they were Mason and Maddox either. He grinned at his brother only to frown a little when the teacher hung up and glanced around the room. "Mason, Maddox, you are wanted in the office." Whispers and some quiet laughter came from the other students. Which caused Maddox to glare at them, willing them to shut up with the evil look that he was giving them. Some did, some didn't care how he looked. He was worried about what was going on. He waited for his brother at the door, and when he got there, he gave his brother a look that said, 'wonder what is going on.' They hadn't caused any trouble today... yet. That was going to come later. He walked down the hallway to the office a couple inches behind his brother. Mason had been older by a couple minutes. They liked to fight over that, because Maddox didn't like the idea of being younger, but according to Momma G one of them had to be. He wondered what she was going to say when she heard that they were yet again going to the office. "Think Momma G is going to be mad at us?" He questioned curiously as he said it in a slow whisper. As the boys turned the corner, he noticed that there were police officers standing outside of the office. Maddox looked at his brother and then put a hand on his brother shoulder for a second. The touch calming him down a little more. Being younger had its benifits.

It was a pretty normal day at school, well normal for the boys. They had just got to class and were immediately separated by their teacher. They knew they would be but at the start of the class they always try to sit together until the teacher notices. Once he noticed, Mason was always the one to get up and move all the way across the room. They didn't need to be next to each other to cause trouble though. Just as Mason was getting settled into his new seat, the phone rang, and the whole class went silent. Mason looked over at his brother who was already smirking, but his face dropped with the teacher spoke our names, telling us that we were wanted at the office. Maddox was already up and ready to go. Mason groaned as he got up and headed for the door. What the heck is this all about he thought. They both walked slowly toward the office, keeping close to each other. "I hope not, we didn't even do anything wrong this time" answering Maddox's question, just as they came into view of the office, and there were police officers. Feeling his little brother's hand on his shoulder, he gives him a small smile and takes a deep breath.

"I'm not sure what's going on, but this doesn't seem good. We need to be ready Mad" he says as calmly as possible, as he reaches for the door to the office, walking in. Mason was scared, he could feel his heart beating faster. As they stepped in letting the door close behind them, they looked toward their principal and then too the officers "Whatever it is we didn't do it" he says defensively.

Maddox hummed and nodded his head as he agreed with his brother about not doing anything. They had never not done anything, but today they had been pretty good. Maddox had gotten mad a little but that was an everyday thing. There wasn't a time of day that he wasn't mad about something. He shook his head and smirked. "Momma G will get us out of trouble like always." he told his brother, but something about when they turned the corner and seen the officers changed something in that statement that he had said. There was no way that he was going to go to the bad kid's place. Nope, he would totally fight on that.

He glanced at his older brother and nodded his head when Mason told him that they needed to be ready. "Of course." he muttered back as they reached the door. Mason was the first one to speak. Which was normally for the best because there was a lot going on in Mad's head at the moment. He didn't know what was going to come out first. Something horrible, or what. More than likely something horrible. That wasn't what he needed either. Well not what they needed at least. Their principal was standing there along with the officers and Maddox looked at each one of them. There was no way they had done anything. "Yeah." he said backing up his brother. "Boys." he man behind the desk said, looking rather sad. Maddox didn't really understand the look he and his brother was getting but he closed his mouth in a tight line. Something wasn't right. He fights or flight response was starting to kick in. "Boys, we have some bad news for you." he began again as he looked to the officers as they moved to the front of the twins. "There was a fire." one of the officers began to say the other one turning to speak softly to the principal behind the desk not paying attention to what was going on behind him. "Aren't there fires all the time?" Maddox asked as it was the stupidest thing to have said to the boys. Maddox looked over to his brother and shrugged a little and the officer sighed a little. "That's not what I mean." he began but didn't give the boys time to say anything else. "The fire was at your house.... your mom... she um... well, you see... she didn't make it." He said trying to be as sensitive as possible to the boys as he could. Maddox's eyes widened a little and he blinked over to his brother. They were old enough to know what the words 'didn't make it' meant.

Mason glared at Maddox when he made his comment, because all he could think about was their grandparents. They passed away in a house fire. That's when it hit him, his eyes when wide and looked back at the others in the room. His eyes said it all, he had a feeling he knew what they were about to say. Mason grabbed for his brother's hand hoping what he was thinking wasn't about to come true. Unfortunately, he was right and just as the officer said it was their house, Mason could feel the tears build before the man even finished his sentence. Don't cry, I have to be strong for Maddox, he thought to himself, taking a deep breath in and trying to blink away the tears. 'she didn't make it' was the last words Mason remembers hearing when all he could see was red, his mind racing, his ears were ringing. Mason had replaced his sadness with his anger without even realizing it.

"Why would she do this to us! Momma G wasn't suppose to die and leave us all alone!" he yells out, as his grip on his brother's hand tightens. Mason was usually the calmer of the two, but he couldn't control himself this time, he wanted nothing more than to scream and tear the room apart. He tried to calm himself, but it wasn't working. Looking to his brother, he whispered "you know what's going to happen to us now" he voice was laced with a sinister but saddened tone hidden within it.

Maddox couldn't believe what was happening. Everything was going in slow motion, he hated everything in that moment. The only voice that he could hear at the moment was Mason's voice. He hated this. He frowned a little more. His mother was dead, and he didn't know what else he was going to do. He heard his brother's voice; it brings him back from that thoughts that were in his head and he turned to him. "What?" he questioned curiously not understanding what was going on. His mind wasn't in the right place. It took him looking at his brother for a little while for it finally to click in his head. He turned and looked at the officers. "You're not taking us at all." he cried out in anger and grabbed his brother's hand before they raced out of the room together. He didn't want to be there anymore. He glanced behind him, looking at his brother. "I don't want to be here anymore." he told him with a frown as they headed to the door.

Mason could see the shear tear on Maddox face, he was feeling that same fear, but he was a little better at concealing those feelings from others to see him, he did not like showing weakness. Anger was really the only emotion Mason let others see. Maddox and his family were the only ones to see him smile and laugh. Now all he could think about was he would never be happy or smile again. He was hurt and all he wanted to do was blame their mom for leaving them. It took a moment for Maddox to realize what the officers were there for, they were just there to tell us she was dead, they were there to take up away, which could mean they could get separated and that wasn't going to happen if they could help it. Once the realization was hit, Mason was being pulled out by Maddox. "I don't want to be here either, we will figure this out Mad, I promise" he says in a pain redden voice as they kept running. They didn't stop running even after they were out of the school, they ran and ran until they found themselves back at their house.

Stopping in their tracks, they staired at the now empty house. "Mad, we might be able to grab a couple things, but we can't stay here, they will come here looking for us" he tells, as tears start to build in his eyes, now that they were away from everyone, Mason couldn't hold back the tears any longer as they started to stream down his face.
