The Claiming Fall 2021

As the sun sets, the campers begin to make their way down to the bonfire. At the beginning of every summer now, it's almost like a ritual. All the new campers get claimed by their parent if the child is 13. Even some of the younger children get claimed from time to time. Nobody wants to miss a chance to welcome a new member to their cabin, or to find out where those particularly interesting individuals go. And so it was in the fall of 2021, like many autumns before it. The claiming.

Azrael took the time to stoke the flames and throw a few more logs of dead wood onto the pile. He had enjoyed the usual campfire songs, a change for all to sing out, whether they were more or less melodic, the camp seemed to pull enough of a harmony together, or maybe that was just some secret of the Apollo campers that lead them in the evening.

Azrael was one of the older and more recently returned campers and was enjoying warming himself at the fireside, sure it was still early Fall and many more stayed on but in comparison to the summer there was a bit more of a chill. He remember the time when he had had this privilege, though it might not have seemed as much to him at the time.

He looked around with a smile to see if any new faces had shown up at the camp, or even any of those that the gossip of the camp said were nearing their thirteenth birthday, the time when the gods had to step forth and name their descendants. He had been chosen for a team late on and it made a big difference to him to see the newer campers being picked up.

Axel's first thought upon learning he was the child of a god had been: Cool! It was probably the typical reaction for a child his age. But the elation that news had brought him was perhaps a bit more poignant to the boy than most. Bloodlines had always been a factor in his life. From the genetic disease that was killing his father, to the mistreatment he'd received for not being Mr. Rainer's kid - blood had not been kind to the Gauthier's. But there was a chance for this to be different. Now it turned out his heritage may not be the curse he thought it, but a boon that might make him somebody special. He didn't care that the deity had yet to introduce themselves. Surely, the gods had their reasons. But he did hope that tonight they might claim him as their own.

He had to wonder just what this ceremony would be like. The young man sat by the fire across from an older-looking camper. He recognized him vaguely as the guy who was always hanging with his current cabin leader. Oh yeah! Guess it might be my last night in Hermes cabin. He hadn't grown particularly attached to anyone there in the short time he'd been at the camp, so he supposed that didn't really bother him. He did wonder, however, what his new group would be like.

Before long the campfire was roaring and most of the members of Camp Half-Blood were sitting there around it. As had become tradition, Lilythe guided the new campers, including @ Axel Gauthier  to the front of the group. She smiled and reassured them that everything would be okay, explaining to the younger ones--those not quite 13 yet--that their parents may not claim them tonight and may wait until they were older, and ensuring those who had reached their thirteenth year, or close to it, that their parent would claim them tonight. They didn't have to wait long. As soon as the sun set the gods began their work.

Above Axel's head, a flaming torch wreathed in laurels and a shimmer of gold began to brightly glow. It was clear to Lilythe, who had been here long enough to know every claiming symbol, exactly where Axel belonged. "Well that settles it, dear. You're bound for Cabin Seventeen. Nike." Lilythe smiled and gestured towards the benches where the rest of the cabin seventeen children were sitting. She pointed at @ McKayla Johnson  and whispered to Axel, "She'll be the best one to show you the ropes for now." Not all the Cabin Leaders had returned yet, so Lilythe tried to point out the most experienced campers when and where she could.

MK was sitting at the fire, it was one of the last ones before she leaves to go home. The end of her time at camp would be distant and only so often before she was back in Boston. As the new set of campers were coming into the camp. She would watch as they one by one had the chance to be claimed. A red head boy started to have something begin to happen when a flaming torch appeared. A smirk came on her face as she knew this was the claiming of one of siblings. Clapping her hands she looked to the left scooting to make room for the boy next to her. Smiling she waved @ Axel Gauthier  over to her to join her!

Hanging back in the crowd TJ had lurked at the edge of the bonfire's light. He had been along to a couple of these, mostly aiming to show how much he didn't care about not being claimed. He was still a good few years away from the claiming age so knew it was petty but he felt he was missing out seeing the others with their weird symbols. Still he as doing fine without one.

This time he was nursing a few bruises and scrapes from the time in the wood with the Capture the Flag game. He caught sight of the James the Lotto powered camp leader and struck up an impudent not caring look. He was starting to find his way around, even knew a couple of the cabin leaders who took the classes. He had even managed to bumble him along with the songs of the Apollo cabin, at least getting a few of the words along with the actions for some of the more active ones.

He was getting used to his time in cabin eleven, a lot of the kids who came through the unclaimed bunks didn't seem to stay long but he had claimed a good bottom bunk in the reshuffling, one of the few available, though he was getting fed up of the looks of sympathy, he didn't need to be claimed and was pretty good at the lessons he had tried so far.

After having shown face, he snuck a bit back from the other campers, out of sight of the glow from the flickering campfire. He had shown face and was doing fine and could get back to his bunk before he would be jostled by the rest of the campers headed back.

Lilythe watched as Axel joined his newfound sister. She was grateful that McKayla was so welcoming. Moving out of the Hermes cabin could be hard when people got claimed, since it was their first home at camp. Having a welcoming cabin for their parent would help ease that pain a bit.

It wasn't long before the next child's claiming was underway. Lilythe couldn't help but smile as she saw an all too familiar symbol glowing above the head of young @ TJ Gardner . "Welcome, officially, to Cabin 11 TJ. Go join our siblings around the fire, little brother." Lilythe said, beaming at him and gesturing to where the rest of the campers from Cabin 11 were gathered.

Following Lilythe's directions, Axel looked over toward the Nike cabin. They were smiling, welcoming... it was suspicious. That camper the leader had pointed out was waving him over. It wasn't that friendly people didn't exist, it was just - well, nobody tended to stay friendly for long. His awkward demeanor combines with his competitive tendencies had a way of grating on people's nerves. Still, it was never his intention to make enemies, and this was no different. And these kids were special, right? Special like him. Children of... Nike, was it? He couldn't recall hearing about that particular Greek god in regular-people school. He hoped it was someone cool. The flaming torch above his head was certainly a point in favor of that.

He strode over to the Nike table and extended a hand to the indicated camper. "Axel," he stated. It came off a bit more blunt than he was intending, but he hoped this girl could see past a bit of awkwardness. "Guess I'm your new brother."

TJ was not sure exactly what he felt, he had spent the last week in camp staunchly confirming he didn't need a cabin, or a family, or a god parent to give him into trouble. It took a while for the glowing above him to register as a sign for him within the crowd. The others near him parted and he saw the shape a little more, wings and snakes.. some kinda monster god.. he felt alot of emotions.. a dripping poison tail would be nasty but how would you find pants to fit..

It was only when he heard the camp leader lady say to go join cabin 11 did he start to realize which one that was, he had been there already for a week. As he took a couple of steps aside he saw the sign properly.. it was that funny one all around the Hermes cabin.. the pointy stick with the snakes and winds.. the crafty god... he breathed a sigh of relief at not being a monster godling after all.

He took the time to walk over to the rest of the Hermes cabin, he had seen a few other campers claimed over the past week and scored the best bunk in the unclaimed section as a possible 'long termer' but now he was meant to be there. His shoulders went a little further back as he made his way over, he definitely didn't need a place with these folks, but he was happy to have found it. He wiped a silent tear of happiness from his eye with a sleeve as he stood with the others and quietly mumbled "Stupid ashes blowing everywhere"

MK thought back to when she was first claimed at the bonfire in the summer of 2017. How scared she was to find out that she was not just a demi-god but had a lot of other siblings that were just like her. That first summer she felt like she had a hard time fitting in but over time it became much more nature! So when her newly claimed half brother Axel walked over to her, she smiled hoping she could be as welcoming as those who welcomed her. "Mine is McKayla but you can call me MK" she said with sassiness. "Yeap and I your sister...well half sister but nonetheless welcome to cabin seventeen" she said making room for him if he wanted to take it. "I can help you get a bunk later and maybe we can play a game or something" she said to him with a smirk.
